College Essay Sample - Using a Narrative Format

College Essay Sample - Using a Narrative FormatMany students wonder if they should use a narrative genre essay sample for their freshman composition class. But first, it is helpful to understand why you would want to create a narrative essay and why students tend to enjoy using them so much.If you have read some of my articles on essay writing, you may have already noticed the problem of too much information in a medium narrative essay. It is the sheer volume of information that makes many writers bored and often leads to poor academic performance. A narrative may be more enjoyable if it contains only three or four major events. These events may be narrated from the perspective of the narrator (the person describing the story) and sometimes they may be loosely connected with the rest of the story line.Narrative essays are fun to write and are also helpful in test taking. Students like to read them because they are designed to be entertaining. A narrative also tends to make the facts seem more coherent than facts presented in the format of a standard analysis.College students are typically interested in learning how to be more knowledgeable. They do not like reading data for hours at a time and especially not when they can relate the data to something they already know. This is where a narrative comes in.When students write a narrative format essay, they usually end up spending an average of one hour doing the research for the essay. Students can easily 'connect' the events in the essay through an introduction and a central theme. Students love this part of the essay. The key element of a format narrative is that it is set up in such a way that the events are easy to connect to other events. Once students are able to see the connections between all the events, it will become easier for them to summarize the narrative. Although it is easy to link different events together, students must keep in mind that each event will be given its own unique starting and ending point. After the descriptive beginning and ending points of the narrative, the student should then consider what type of conclusion they should use. Sometimes the conclusion is as simple as expressing gratitude for the writer's experience, while at other times, the student may choose to honor the narrator by presenting an overall assessment of the entire essay. No matter what the situation, the college student who is used to writing a format narrative will have a better time writing one. Use a narrative genre essay sample when you want to engage students in your college writing assignments.
